DOUALA UNIVERSITY
As part of the Cameroon Government’s far-reaching programme of reforms, the country’s higher education system is under the spotlight for expansion and improvement.

Currently, there are seven state-run universities and a handful of private universities. All but one are based on the French system of education.

An eighth public university is now being planned in Bamenda, a city located 225 miles northwest of Yaounde, adding to the area’s cache of excellent private schools. The site chosen for the University of Bamenda is Bambili, a town some 10 miles east, where several structures already exist and the local landlords are willing to help expedite construction. In March this year, President Biya signed a decree laying down the new university’s administrative and academic organisation, which will have an Anglo-Saxon style of management.
