Background
Serving as an intern at the then Japan Department of Agriculture and Commerce, Kewpie’s founder Toichiro Nakashima was sent to the United States and Europe where he received his first taste of mayonnaise. With dreams of introducing these delicious treats to Japan, he returned and began marketing mayonnaise in 1925. In launching the nation’s first mayonnaise, Mr Nakashima used twice the amount of egg yolks found in overseas products to ensure a full-bodied taste. Rich in nutrients, his goal was to improve the body size of Japanese people.
