‘The key to success is patience’

Article - September 19, 2011
As the company’s chairman, how do you view the evolution of Haji Husein Alireza Co Ltd in Saudi Arabia?
SHEIKH AMIN A ABULHASAN, CHAIRMAN OF HAJI HUSEIN ALIREZA, CO LTD
Our evolution has largely shadowed that of Saudi Arabia.

When we were established, we were a diversified trading group as many family companies were in the early part of the 20th century.

While we had a continuous leadership presence in the automotive sector, we were also involved in other fields as varied as real estate and food. As our economy grew, we decided to specialise in the automotive field. This took place in the mid 1970s. We reduced interests in other fields and further directed our investments on the motor trade.

This strategy has paid off as we solidified our position as one of the leading automotive car and truck distributors in Saudi Arabia.

We continue to invest in our business and are very optimistic about our future in the Saudi market.

Consistently ranked as one of the top 100 in Saudi Arabia, how has the company become so successful?

Patience and consistency have been the hallmarks of our strategy. Generation after generation has followed a patient, growth-oriented strategy. It is a steady reinvestment in our business that I would credit most with keeping us at the forefront in our industry and we plan to continue this strategy into the future. This is one of the advantages a typical family company may have over many publicly held institutions, where emphasis on quarterly results sometimes overwhelms the long-term prospects. The idea really is to create a balance between the two imperatives.

Where do you want the company to go in the future?

Our market is growing at a breakneck pace during this period of strong GDP growth. The opportunities are huge in Saudi Arabia for the next decade as the Saudi government’s plans for infrastructure growth and investment in social services multiply exponentially.

We also recognise the opportunities that lie in other business sectors.

We recently diversified again by buying a market-leading IT company, providing solutions in many sectors such as healthcare, industry, finance, etc, and working closely with leading names such as HP, Cisco, Oracle and Intermec.

The National Computer Systems Company (NATCOM) was established in 1978, which gives it a tremendous track record in its industry.

Saudi companies will have a big role to play in the country’s transformation and we look forward to the opportunity to both contribute and benefit from this exciting period in our nation’s development.
