Celebrating 90 years of innovation, Japanese industrial pump manufacturer Sanwa Hydrotech Corporation (Sanwa Hydrotech) is cementing its legacy. Continuing to break new ground, Sanwa Pump is expanding into emerging markets and driving advancements in fluid control technology. Sanwa has solidified its reputation as a market leader and earned a reputation as an indispensable partner.
"We position NetZERO at the core of our global business strategy," says Sanwa Hydrotech President and CEO Kiyotaka Horiuchi. He describes the sector as an “unexplored frontier” and says the company is committed to developing new technologies.
Having established itself in 1934 with stainless steel casting, it wasn’t long after the company moved into pump manufacturing. In response to the growing demand for leak-free pumps capable of handling hazardous and toxic liquids, Sanwa pioneered highly durable, corrosion-resistant magnetic drive pumps in the 1980s—branded as "Sanwa Pump," a product now synonymous with the company’s name. Four decades on, the worldwide supply record of "Sanwa Pump" stainless steel magnetic drive pumps is approaching a cumulative total of 200,000 units.
"Our ability to adapt and meet customer needs has allowed us to sustain our business,” The President says. With its long lifespan, excellent maintenance efficiency, and space-saving design, the company is also expanding its presence in the Net ZERO sector. One of the company’s key Net ZERO initiatives was introducing pumps into the methanation pilot plant being developed by Osaka Gas Co. Ltd. at the Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai. He explains: "Sanwa Pumps are used in the water electrolysis system of the methanation pilot plant, as well as for circulating high-temperature liquids within the methanation reaction equipment. There are very few pumps capable of withstanding such harsh conditions, making this a perfect application of our technology." He adds, "The synthesized methane gas is supplied to the kitchen of the guest house, where it serves as the heat source for preparing meals for distinguished guests from around the world."
Sanwa Hydrotech boasts a 20-year legacy in green hydrogen production through water electrolysis systems, earning a strong reputation for the reliability and safety of its cutting-edge pumps. Further solidifying its role in the clean energy transition, its technology has been selected for a pioneering demonstration project in Japan, where surplus solar power is harnessed for hydrogen production. By driving innovation in this critical initiative, Sanwa Pump is actively shaping the future of the hydrogen society.
As the petrochemical industry intensifies efforts to cut CO₂ emissions, Sanwa Hydrotech stands above, powering key sustainability processes. The company plays a vital role in carbon recycling, where CO₂ emitted from factories is captured, separated, and repurposed as a raw material for chemical production and reuse.
In 2003, Sanwa shifted its focus entirely to pump manufacturing, discontinuing its stainless steel casting business. To honor its founder’s vision, the company created a monument inscribed with his guiding principle: “New Technologies, New Materials, New Products,” ensuring that his legacy continues to inspire future generations. The President speaks to this truth: “We must continuously respond to the demands of each era and develop products that truly make a difference.”
Looking ahead to Sanwa Hydrotech’s 100th anniversary, he emphasizes the importance of staying attuned to customer needs and strengthening partnerships both in Japan and abroad. It is essential to accurately understand our customers’ needs and maintain strong collaborations with our domestic and international partners,” he explains.
As the company strives for continued growth, Mr. Horiuchi remains forward-thinking. “We aim to embrace societal changes and take on new challenges, ensuring that Sanwa Hydrotech evolves alongside the industries it serves,” he concludes.
