Since the 19th century, the equatorial area of the Americas has enjoyed a close relationship with classical music, and the ‘bel canto’ was forged in the mold of epic classics such as Fitzcarraldo that was, among many others, performed in the Opera Theatre at Manaus in Brazil.
Guayaquil also has its own operatic history, the last chapter of which has been written by Nicolás Romero Sangster, who apart from being an engineer and General Director of the
Guayaquil Airport Authority, has spent the last five years spreading the word about opera with a cycle of seminars directed at all members of the public.
This important work carried out by Romero is evocatively titled “The magic of the opera”, and has enhanced the public’s understanding and respect for symphonic, classical and operatic music.
Guayaquil is also the home of two internationally renowned sopranos in Beatriz Parra Durango and Astrid Achi, who add to the city’s renown in this musical sphere that Romero began with his project to increase both opera and classical music with the help of the Dante Alighieri Foundation and the Guayaquil Symphonic Foundation, among many other organizations.
