Perhaps one of the most important aspects in which President Santos has distinguished himself from the outset has been in Colombia’s foreign relations.
Upon his election, analysts predicted the new President would work to increase Colombia’s influence in the region and place a greater emphasis on regional integration. Many believe that President Santos could fulfill the vacancy in Latin American leadership left by former Brazilian president Lula da Silva.
Indeed, since taking office less than a year ago, the Colombian President has restored ruptured diplomatic relations with Venezuela and Ecuador, acted as a mediator in securing Honduras’ return to the Organization of American States, and pushed for greater international involvement in the reconstruction of Haiti in the United Nations (Colombia was elected last October as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for the 2011-2012 term).
