Customs brokers can save importers time and money

Article - September 21, 2011
The son of the second broker in Angola, Rui Alberto da Silva Simões continues in his father’s footsteps by leading Cabinda’s oldest customs brokerage in operation since 1921
Beginning in the 1950s American oil companies entered Cabinda, bringing with them American workers and their families. The presence of these new arrivals resulted in improved infrastructure and first-world commodities, which needed to be imported from abroad. Oil companies also required special equipment not available locally, thus creating a large demand for specialized brokers who could expedite the  import process.

Founded in Cabinda in 1921, the company Rui Alberto da Silva Simões had mainly served the timber industry but over time learned the intricacies of the oil and gas business. In fact, it was this brokerage that exported the first oil samples from Angola. Clients have included the likes of Halliburton, Chevron (and formerly Gulf Oil), and Schlumberger.

Today, Rui Alberto da Silva Simões assists companies of all types with customs brokering in both Luanda and Cabinda. Now they serve clients in everything from food to construction materials, and offer them a one-stop solution. “We help them in the beginning to get all the licenses and paperwork they need to ensure they adhere to Angolan rules and regulations. We make sure we consult them on the best way to ship their product. After goods clear customs, we have trucking companies working with us that deliver the goods directly to the client’s destination,” explains Mr. Simões. He adds, “If a customer needs a warehouse or other additional services like translation or secretariat, we can find the best fit for their type of goods.”

Obtaining the correct license and registration, and choosing the best port of entry are vital for not only saving time, but money as well. Having a trusted customs broker help with the importation process can literally save a client thousands in fines, fees and other costs. Different entry points have different regulations and the government has various tax exemptions and reductions based on provinces and products, so it is vital to have someone who knows them all. Relying on Rui Alberto da Silva Simões’ knowledge has not only saved clients money and time but made doing business in Angola a far more pleasant experience.
