Experience

Mr Mazzoncini has been employed in the public transport sector since 1992.

He began his activity as an electrical designer in the railway sector at Transystem (Ansaldo Trasporti group), at first involved in the restructuring plans of secondary railway lines.

Then, from 1994, he was part of the team of technicians at Consorzio Saturno (“Saturn Consortium”) tasked with realizing the technological systems of the new high-speed network. He followed in particular the new electric power project for the high-speed lines.

Within an international context, Mr Mazzoncini took part in a project team set up by Ansaldo Trasporti for the realization of Copenaghen’s automatic metro, between 1995 and 2000.

In 1997, following the opening up of the local public transport market (Bassanini Law and Legislative Decree No. 422/97), Mr Mazzoncini was called to head the private rubber transport company Autoguidovie (Ranza group), of which he became director in 1998. Under his guidance, Autoguidovie embarked on a path of important growth by winning tenders and by acquiring qualified holdings in public transport companies owned by local bodies.

During the following years, Mr Mazzoncini carried out many functions as CEO on the boards of directors of local transport companies, public, private and mixed.

In 2005, he concluded a joint venture agreement between Autoguidovie and the French public transport giant Transdev (Caisse des Depots group), on whose board he sat as Italy’s representative since 2008.

In 2012, Mr Mazzoncini was called on by the Italian state railway to head the fledgling Busitalia. Within the scope of a renewed Italian State Railway Group’s strategy in local public transport, he was the architect of the joint venture which still links Autoguidovie to the Italian State Railway Group, and dedicated himself, in his capacity as CEO of the two companies, to the development and consolidation of the leading national public transport operator in the rubber and metro field.

Between 2012 and 2014, Busitalia tripled in size, inter alia by acquiring control over Florence’s public urban company, the first major Italian privatization in local public transport, Umbria’s regional company and Padua’s urban company.

At the end of 2014, the Busitalia/Autoguidovie joint venture was recognized as the number one Italian player in local public transport, and managed more than 120 million bus-km, some secondary railway lines, metropolitan and tramway urban systems, funicular and lacustrine systems, and in the process employing 5,000 employees and more than 2,000 means of transport.
