Malaysia to host the 25th World Gas Conference

Article - October 5, 2011
The global gas industry will converge in Kuala Lumpur come June of next year
ZAHARIAH (LIZA) ABDUL RAHMAN, CEO AND HEAD DIRECTORATE OF THE NATIONAL ORGANISING COMMITTEE, WORLD GAS CONFERENCE 2012, KUALA LUMPUR
All eyes will be on Kuala Lumpur as it embraces the opportunity to host the 25th World Gas Conference, due to take place on 4-8 June 2012. With an expected attendance of 3,500 paying delegates, 250 international speakers, 14 keynote addresses and as many as 200 exhibitors, this triennial occasion is promised to be the most prestigious event in the gas industry.

Themed “Gas: Sustaining Future Global Growth”, this event is of special importance to Malaysia as this is only the second time in its history that WGC is hosted in Asia, and the first time held in the ASEAN region. The honour given to Malaysia for the triennial presidency of 2009-2012 and also as the hosting country for World Gas Conference 2012 (WGC2012), truly reflects the International Gas Union as a highly international organisation while acknowledging the growing importance of Asia in the gas industry.

Next year’s WGC promises something different for the participants by initiating three special projects through Task Forces in addition to the existing working and programme committees. These Task Forces will address significant issues such as human capital, nurturing the future generations, and geopolitics and natural gas, and this, according to Zahariah Abdul Rahman (fondly known as Liza), is what makes the WGC2012 “unique and highly relevant to the most current trends while addressing pressing issues of the future.”

While WGC2012 aspires to build a new benchmark with the presentation of new elements into the WGC series, it is still designed to ensure exquisite networking platforms and social events that have been the tradition during the previous WGCs. Participants can expect to gain first hand awareness of the latest technologies of the gas industry from the studies that will be presented during the conference. “As a delegate, participation means to be part of the future course of the gas industry as this is an event made by the industry, for the industry,” says Liza.

Malaysia also has an array of features to offer the participants, ranging from its diverse multicultural population, adaptable lifestyle and a well-developed infrastructure. These constitute a good package for visitors from all parts of the world to feel at ease and delighted and would also give them a chance to experience the unique Malaysian hospitality.

“It will be a refreshing experience as we will be injecting some Malaysian culture into it. Not forgetting about bringing to the centre stage our capabilities and knowledge to organise an event of a global magnitude while continuing to advocate gas as the fuel of choice for sustainable progress,” Liza enthused.

Being a premier gas conference, WGC2012 is generating a substantial amount of interest from key players in the international gas industry. With regards to the local and regional arena, the event has full support from the Malaysian Gas Association. Malaysia’s national oil company, PETRONAS, is the host sponsor for the event and is working closely with the WGC2012 National Organising Committee to ensure that Malaysia holds the most successful and memorable event in the WGC series.
