A focused vision to create a greener

Article - March 7, 2013
The Saudi Paper Manufacturing Company (SPMC) is a fully integrated paper enterprise focused on recycling, manufacturing and converting paper, which is determined to become the most sustainable business in the kingdom
Established in 1989, the Saudi Paper Manufacturing Company (SPMC) is the largest manufacturer of tissue paper rolls in the Middle East. SPMC has three main companies based in Saudi Arabia, namely: Saudi Paper Manufacturing Company, Saudi Recycling Company and Saudi Paper Converting Company. As well as the production of jumbo tissue rolls, one of SPMC’s primary activities is the collection of waste paper, which has a positive impact on the environment and society as a whole.

Prince Abdullah bin Mosaad bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, Chairman of SPMC, sheds some light on his company’s determination to follow a green path and become the most sustainable business in the kingdom.

“There is a lot of waste paper in Saudi, and that is not good for the environment or the economy,” said Prince Abdullah. “We can solve many problems if we just start segregating waste from homes, just the main things like paper, glass and aluminum. If we were to do this, waste paper would be more readily available to people other than us to start up different industries. That would help create Saudi jobs. We have not been successful up until now when it comes to dealing with home waste, but I think it is only a matter of time.”

The chairman is highly optimistic about the country’s current business leaders preparing the next generation.

“We have all the tools to accomplish the King’s vision and to change the country for the better. But it needs hard work and accountability,” he says. “We need the best and brightest minds. Not only should we seek to develop our own sons and daughters, and to ensure through Saudization that they have opportunities to prosper and contribute; we should seek to attract the best and brightest minds (scientists, specialists, entrepreneurs) within the Muslim world.”

Looking to the future, the Prince has big plans for his company over the next five to 10 years. “I want it to grow to become a regional power,” he says. “I want to see Saudi Paper strong in Asia and Africa. We will also export to Europe.

“I would like to see SPMC grow into other related businesses. Also, I want to always have strong, passionate, young management, and, of course, for the company to continue being profitable.”
