QUINTANA ROO

Article - December 2, 2013
From Cancún to Riviera Maya, Quintana Roo knows how to jazz
EARTH, WIND AND FIRE HEADLINED THIS YEAR’S FESTIVAL JAZZ FESTIVAL
While the state of Quintana Roo may be most well know for its incredibly popular Cancún resort, the region certainly has plenty more to offer than the tequila-drenched hedonism that embarks on this part of Mexico every spring break.

Located around 50 miles further south of Cancún along the Mexican-Caribbean coastline, Riviera Maya is one of the country’s other hottest tourism destinations.

This is because – in addition to its pristine natural setting – Riviera Maya is also home to its very own internationally renowned jazz festival. Indeed, the Riviera Maya Jazz Festival, voted one of the top 10 jazz events in the world, celebrated its 11th anniversary when it kicked off on November 28, 2013. The event is held on the white sand beaches at Mamitas Beach Club, located in the heart of Playa Del Carmen.

Over the years, the event has come to capture the heart and the imagination of music lovers everywhere. Many jazz legends and Grammy winners have participated in the festival, including George Duke, Four Play, Sergio Mendes, Herbie Hancock, Ivan Lins, David Sanborn, Earl Klugh, Armando Manzanero and Sacbe, among others.

Thanks to the participation of such esteemed performers, the festival has developed into one of the biggest musical traditions in Riviera Maya and has also become one of the destination’s signature annual events. During the course of three days, tourists not only have the opportunity to enjoy Riviera Maya’s incredible beauty, but also an amazing array of music.
