“In Angola we have got a problem because people are not used to taking disability as a fact of life; most families with disabled children hide them from society,” says Mr. Rocha Pinto. “Now, with the Criança for Children Project – which actually is supported by ESCO, Texaco and Sonangol, – I want, together with Fundo Lwyni, to be able to develop a program that will consist of reintegrating back into people’s consciousness the perception that these children are to have the very same rights as others. In other words, they ought to have the same access to schools and sports, which are areas where they can recover their feeling of value.”
Mr. Rocha Pinto cites the example of two children who they started to help two years ago and whose parents today feel proud to bring them to the organization’s training center. “They go back home and they are totally different people; they are more open and are happier. In the last festival we managed to have 350 kids from all over the country. The number of kids we can help will grow as people start to know what our organization is doing for the children,” he says, adding that they are planning to create representations around the country to expand their reach.
