Algerians love their mobile phones. In fact, mobile penetration is close to 100 per cent in Algeria, which together with fixed line penetration of around 8 per cent gives the country one of the highest teledensities in Africa.
At the time of writing, the launch of 3G in Algeria is believed to be imminent.
Moussa Benhamadi, the former Minister of Post and ICT, said recently the government was ready to award 3G licences to all three mobile networks “in the coming weeks.”
The introduction of 3G will enable the providers to compete in the broadband sector. Opportunities to boost revenue will come from value-added services and improved customer care and network coverage.
The Algerian telecom market as a whole generated $5.5 billion (£3.5 billion) in 2011, a 17 per cent increase compared with $4.7 billion in 2010. The ITC sector currently accounts for 4 per cent of GDP. The government would like to see it account for 8 per cent of GDP.
