Canyons, cascades, colonial plazas – the state of Chihuahua has it all

Article - November 6, 2012
Not many places can claim to have a tourist attraction as spectacular as the Grand Canyon in the United States
A SPECTACULAR AND MIXED COUNTRYSIDE OFFERING HIKING, MOUNTAIN BIKING, ROCK CLIMBING, RAVINES AND GULLIES
But the Mexican state of Chihuahua goes even further – it boasts the Copper Canyon, a dramatic canyon system larger and deeper than the Grand Canyon.

The Copper Canyon, or Las Barrancas del Cobre, forms part of the Sierra Madre Occidental mountain range that dominates the western part of the state with its majestic terrain and spectacular canyons, and which overshadows the North Central Plateau on the eastern side.

Within the Copper Canyon, the Basaseachic Falls National Park is located. The Basaseachic Waterfall along the Basaseachic River is the single most impressive of Chihuahua’s famous series of waterfalls.

At a height of 310 metres, Basaseachic is the second highest waterfall in Mexico and regarded as a natural wonder. The highest waterfall, Cascada de Piedra Volada, only flows seasonally, whereas Basaseachic cascades all year round.

Chihuahua is Mexico’s largest state, and its northern border forms a frontier with the US states of New Mexico and Texas, where the well-known Chihuahua city of Ciudad Juarez is located.

Because of Chihuahua’s indigenous and European influences, the state offers an interesting cultural mix. In the capital city of Chihuahua, tourists admire the plazas built in the colonial era and during the 19th century mining boom.

Chihuahua is rich in startling countryside that encourages many people to go hiking, mountain biking or rock climbing. The state also offers interesting archaeological areas such as Paquime, a mysterious pre-Hispanic city of adobe constructions.

Locals recommend taking the Chihuahua-Pacifico train for a full tour of the canyon.
From the railway station of Creel, passengers can travel on to Batopilas, which has beautiful and spectacular views of ravines and gullies.

There is of course the option of renting horses, scooters and trucks supplied with free maps, travel information and sometimes, even lunch.
