Bio

Mr. Albert Phuay Yong Hen is the Founder, Chairman and Group CEO of Excelpoint Technology Ltd., a listed company on Singapore Exchange (“SGX”) and headquartered in Singapore. He oversees the general management of the business, and is also responsible for Excelpoint’s strategic direction, planning and business development.

Information

Experience:

Mr. Phuay began his career in the electronics and technology sectors, gaining experience and exposure through roles ranging from quality assurance to manufacturing. From 1977 to 1979, he was appointed Quality Control Engineer at Conic Electronics Pte Ltd. In 1979, he worked as a Quality Assurance Engineer at Rollei Pte Ltd before joining Central Systems Pte Ltd in 1984 as its General Manager.

With a close friend’s loan of US$25,000, trust and an electronic distribution agreement from a supplier, Mr. Phuay established Excelpoint in 1987, and worked hard to build its business foundation, serving both upstream principals/suppliers and downstream customers in the electronics industry.

He recognised the untapped prospects for the growth of technology and electronics in the developing manufacturing industry in China, and ventured into this region in the 1980s. In the 1990s, he established in-house research and development (“R&D”) teams in Singapore and China to meet evolving technological and consumer trends, and also entered the India market. These strategies strengthened the foundations of Excelpoint’s business model with a beneficial multilateral working relationship between Excelpoint and its principals/suppliers and customers.

From a one-man operation since its inception, Excelpoint today has over 700 employees and a business presence spanning over 40 cities in more than 10 countries across the Asia Pacific region. Listed on the mainboard of SGX since January 2004, Excelpoint is now one of the leading business-to-business platforms that provide quality electronic components, engineering design services and supply chain management to original equipment manufacturers (“OEMs”), original design manufacturers (“ODMs”) and electronics manufacturing services (“EMS”) in Asia Pacific.

Under Mr. Phuay’s steadfast leadership in the past 30 years, Excelpoint achieved a record revenue of US$1.15 billion for the financial year ended 31 December 2017.

Mr. Phuay clinched the Entrepreneur of the Year Award in the Electrical and Electronics Industry category at the Asia Pacific Entrepreneurship Awards 2017 for his ingenuity and contributions to the electronics sector in the Asia Pacific region.

What have been the main lessons you have learned in your career and how do you implement them in your management?

A value that I hold dear to my heart is integrity. I believe that trust will ensue when integrity is upheld. Hence, Excelpoint’s strong relationships with employees, suppliers and customers are still built on a solid foundation of integrity and trust. I also believe in the building of a strong team as they are the anchor of every company as it expands. In addition, I feel that building R&D capabilities and putting extra effort to provide value-added services to stakeholders are key differentiating factors that have brought Excelpoint thus far.

Quotes:

  1. “Having a good team of people is the key to my success, and it is by far one of my biggest achievements in life.”
  2. “The many ups and downs along the way are not as important as building a solid foundation and establishing the right values from day one. The most critical lessons are staying positive and upholding the principles of integrity.”
  3. “It's all about your mindset - I make it a point to be happy and energetic every day.”
  4. “Some things will always go wrong, but if you focus on the 80% to 90% of these occurrences, you will never be happy. All that negativity will just create more trouble and chaos in your life. On the other hand, a positive attitude will go a long way towards resolving problems.”
