Suruga Bank is a medium sized regional bank, founded in 1895, headquartered in Numazu, Shizuoka, in the Chubu region, approximately an hour to reach from Tokyo by bullet train.
It has evolved from a community bank focused on the Numazu, Shizuoka and Shonan communities into a bank serving the greater Tokyo area and the main cities nationwide as well as the Kanagawa and Shizuoka prefectures.
In terms of loan profile, the bank has the largest non-corporate exposure. Consumer loans accounts for 89% of its portfolio, with this share having steadily increased in recent years. Housing accounts for the bulk of this exposure.
The bank retains its focus on the consumer and non-corporate segments. It is looking to expand beyond its traditional geographic market into select high-growth areas, and sees individuals going through asset formation stages and is focusing on offering products along this timeline.
