Background

Suminoe Textile was founded by rice dealer Denshichi Murata, who opened the Murata Factory in 1883 in Osaka. Originally started as a side business in a private household, this small factory for manufacturing hand-woven carpets was soon receiving orders for interiors for railway cars and ships, and even for the Imperial Diet Building, heralding the dawn of Japan’s interior decoration industry.

Suminoe Textile has continually endeavored to realize technical advancements throughout our 130-year history, and under our thorough quality management, we have pursued the creation of better products.

Competitive Advantages

Interior Fittings

  • Suminoe Textile has supplied carpets for the National Diet Building since its opening 125 years ago. Our company has also delivered interior materials for the imperial palace buildings and state guesthouses, winning high trust from many public agencies.
  • In the field of arts and crafts textiles, we are committed to preserving the Nishijin-ori weaving techniques, which have been handed down in Kyoto for more than 1,300 years. Through these traditional techniques, Suminoe Textile has played an important role in the Ise Grand Shrine Shikinen Sengu ceremony (transfer of the shrine’s sacred objects to a newly constructed main hall), held once every 20 years. Specifically, the company has been privileged to supply its textiles for use in the Shikinen Sengu ceremony for sacred apparel and treasures, four times since 1953.

Automotive Textiles and Traffic Facilities

  • Suminoe Textile is Japan’s No. 1 supplier in the automotive textile business. We are the only manufacturer capable of providing a total range of automotive interior materials, from seat covering materials, ceiling materials, to carpets.
  • Seat covering materials for railway vehicles are one of the businesses launched by our founder. Suminoe Textile holds more than half of the domestic market share in seat covering materials used for JR and other private railways combined.

Company Goals & Objectives

Suminoe Textile aims to expand its market share and improve its ratio of operating income to net sales by further focusing on the expansion of its overseas business and active promotion of one-of-a-kind products that are friendly to the environment. Under its three-year medium-term management plan, the company will actively develop its business in each segment to achieve the following targets during the plan’s period: net sales of 100,000 million yen, operating income of 5,000 million yen, and ROE of 8% or higher.
