Innovative research projects conducted by a team of researchers at Qatar University Qatar Mobility Innovations Center (QU-QMIC) have developed state-of-the-art connected vehicles technology to contribute to addressing road safety and driving challenges in Qatar and beyond.
Led by QMIC Connected-Vehicles Program Product Manager and R&D expert Dr Hamid Menouar, a team of local and international researchers have developed a standard-compliant connected-vehicles platform that enables vehicles to communicate wirelessly with other vehicles on the road as well as with the road infrastructure.
“This cutting-edge technology is a huge step forward in terms of road safety by enabling fast data communication among vehicles, providing their safety systems with a more detailed and accurate view of the surrounding environment,” says Dr Menouar.
Connected-vehicles technology is a key enabler of next generation road safety, he says, and cites a study by the US Department of Transportation that found connected vehicles could potentially address up to 80% of road accidents involving non-impaired drivers. This will be a considerable improvement in road safety in Qatar, and is also a key enabler of autonomous driving by engaging fast and reliable communication among vehicles within the same vicinity.
Improving road safety is in itself a great benefit, but there are also other benefits in terms of driver comfort and traffic efficiency, as this emerging technology will open a door for a number of new applications.
Dr Menouar adds: “Qatar is a great candidate for this new technology and is among the first countries in the world to feature country-wide connected-vehicles deployment. This could be one of the technologies to be showcased during the FIFA World Cup 2022.”
QMIC Executive Director Dr Adnan Abu-Dayya says: “Connected-vehicle technology represents a key element of QMIC’s leading and integrated road safety innovations portfolio. It complements our unique driving and traffic solutions, such as Masarak and Salamtek. With road safety a critical area of interest as Qatar’s development continues at pace, the establishment of a safe and modern transportation system will serve to address road safety challenges in line with the goals of Qatar National Vision 2030.”
