Bio

Background / Biography:

Akiyo Hirakubo, a Japan-born creator, developed a deep fascination with American lingerie while studying in the U.S. After returning to Osaka, she managed several lingerie stores for Ripplu Corp. In 1991, Akiyo began importing and wholesaling American and European lingerie. Three years later, driven by her passion for lingerie, she launched her own brand: Bradelis New York.

Experience:

Akiyo’s interest in the functionality of undergarments was sparked by her college roommate, who encouraged her to explore the differences between foundational garments (shapewear) designed to support and shape the body and lingerie (decorative undergarments) intended to enhance one’s appearance.

Her first bra-fitting experience was a turning point. Shocked to learn she had been wearing the wrong size, Akiyo felt exhilarating comfort after finding the right fit. This moment inspired her to enter the lingerie business to offer others the same transformative experience.

Professional accomplishments:

Now the president of Gold Flag Ltd., Akiyo oversees a team of 300 employees while managing product development and retail and online stores. Since 2008, she has become one of the highest-selling personalities on the television shopping channel QVC, where she regularly appears live.

Mentors:

Akiyo’s entrepreneurial spirit was nurtured by her mother, a successful businesswoman who managed a hotel and several restaurants and was a spiritual leader. Growing up believing that “The higher power is always watching over you,” Akiyo learned the importance of integrity, gratitude, and respecting nature.

Goals as president:

Akiyo is deeply committed to the values of altruism and benevolence. She believes true happiness comes from making others happy and strives to spread joy with her customers, employees, business partners, and local community. For her, unconditional love is at the core of everything.

Quotes:

“Live this day as if it were your last,” Akiyo embraces life fully, striving to live each day without regret.
