New hospital developments

Article - November 17, 2014

An N800-million ($4.9m) investment by the Sokoto State Government has finally brought construction of the state’s Murtala Mohammad Specialist Hospital to completion.

Launched in 1991 but stalled for years by previous administrations, Governor Wamakko has also approved the upgrading of the 600-bed facility to serve as a teaching hospital for the State University. Believing a society’s wealth relies on its health, the government has rejuvenated the health sector, committing more than N4 billion to its development since 2007 to renovate, expand and re-equip existing general hospitals, deploy over 30 well-equipped mobile clinics, upgrade pharmacies, train medical personnel, provide new ambulances, and inaugurate at least 23 general hospitals across the state in recent years. It has also partnered with the new, ultra-modern and privately owned Wamakko Orthopaedic Hospital to make international-standard private healthcare more affordable and create a blueprint for further ventures with the private sector.
