Business Description
Tohoku University was established in 1907 as Japan’s third national university, and is proud to be ranked among its leading universities. The five main campuses are in Sendai city, built around the ancient site of Sendai’s Aoba Castle.
The university has 10 undergraduate schools, 16 graduate schools, three professional graduate schools and six research institutes. There are currently over 18,000 students enrolled at the university, with 1,600 of them international students from 87 countries around the world.
Background
In 1911, Vice-Minister of Education Masataro Sawayanagi moved to Sendai to become Tohoku University’s first president. Mr. Sawayanagi firmly believed that academic research should be integrated with education. He also believed that a university should not discriminate based on class or gender.
Following this principle, Tohoku University accepted graduates from technical and higher normal schools, and despite opposition from the government at that time, became Japan’s first university to admit female students in 1913.
Tohoku University has a history of innovation and continues to lead in traditional fields of research in materials science, physics and chemistry. As a comprehensive research university, most academic fields of study can be taken including the liberal arts, engineering, medicine, and life sciences.
