Full summary of the history of the Port of Santos
The March of the official inauguration of the Port of Santos is February 2, 1892, when the then Dock Company Santos - CDS, delivered the world's shipping the first 260 m of quay, in the area, today called, Valongo. On that date, docked in the new modern pier, the steam "Nasmith," the English flag.

With the opening, started also a new phase in the life of the city, because the old piers and bridges stuck in muddy terrain, were being replaced by stone walls and embankments. A railroad gauge of 1.60 m of new warehouse for the storage of goods, works composed the organized port east, the distant past which started with the foreman Braz Cubas, a member of the Portuguese expedition of Martim Afonso de Souza, who arrived in Brazil in January 1531.

Braz Cubas was the idea of ​​transferring the port of Santos bay to the interior, in protected waters, including the attack of pirates, looters and habitual visitors of the town.

Chosen site called Enguaguaçu, access channel Bertioga, soon formed a village, the reason for the construction of a chapel and a hospital, whose works were completed in 1543. The hospital was named House of Mercy of All Saints. In 1546, the town was elevated to the status of Vila do Porto de Santos. In 1550 he settled in the Customs.

For more than three and a half centuries, the Port of Santos, although he had grown, standards remained stable, with minimal mechanization and very demanding physical work. Moreover, the conditions of hygiene and health of the harbor and the city resulted highly compromised, resulting in the onset of diseases of epidemic.

The start-up in 1867, the São Paulo Railway, connecting by rail, the region of the Santos Plateau, involving the estuary, significantly improved the transport system, stimulating trade and development of the city and state S. Paul.

The coffee culture lay at the time throughout the Planalto Paulista, reaching some areas of Santos, which pushed the authorities to the need for expansion and modernization of port facilities. After all, the coffee could be exported on a larger scale and speed.

On July 12, 1888, by Decree No. 9979, after competitive bidding, the group led by Candido Gaffrée and Eduardo Guinle was authorized to construct and operate for 39 years, later extended to 90 years, the Port of Santos, based on design engineer Savoy and Silva. In order to build the port, dealers formed the company Gaffrée, Guinle & Co., based in Rio de Janeiro, which later became Company Improvement of the Port of Santos, and then, in the Santos Docks Company.

Opened in 1892, the port has continued to expand across all levels of the country's economic growth, appearance and disappearance of types of cargo, even to the current period of widespread use of containers. Sugar, coffee, oranges, cotton, fertilizer, coal, wheat, citrus juices, soy, vehicles, various liquid bulk, in millions of pounds, have made the daily life of the port, which has handled more than l (a) billion tons of various loads, from 1892 until today.

Currently, the Port of Santos, moves per year, more than 60 million tons of cargoes, unimaginable number in 1892, when operated 125 thousand tons. With 12 km of quays, between the two shores of the estuary of Santos, the port entered a new phase of exploration, a result of Law 8.630/93, with lease areas and facilities to the private sector through public bidding.
