Vision/Mission
Hokkaido University was originally founded as Sapporo Agricultural College in 1876 to educate students to become national leaders, and to help develop the potential of Hokkaido. The university upholds the education and research principles of “frontier spirit”, “global perspectives”, “all-round education”, and “practical learning” which developed over its 140-year history.
The university aims to encourage creative research that does not segregate theory from practice, and to promote world-class research to solve problems confronting humankind.
Currently, all our faculty members, students, and graduates make a concerted effort to transform the campus into a global base for education and research.
Business Description
Hokkaido University is a member of RU11, consisting of 11 research universities in Japan. In fiscal year 2014, the Hokkaido Universal Campus Initiative (HUCI) project was selected as one of the 13 universities for the Top Global University Project Type A (Top type) to be funded during 2013-2023 under the support of MEXT (Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology).
In an effort to develop future global leaders, Hokkaido University established special programs for undergraduate students named NITOBE College and for graduate students named NITOBE School. Both programs are intended for selected students of all departments and provided in addition to the normal curriculum. The students benefit from receiving advice from alumni mentors as well as receiving scholarships to study abroad.
In 2014, Hokkaido University formed a new organization to enable researchers to focus on certain academic fields relevant to particular regional and global issues: the GI-CoRE (Global Institution for Collaborative Research and Education). The university invites distinguished research groups from around the world to conduct cutting-edge research and educational activities together with Hokkaido University’s researchers, in such fields as quantum medical science and engineering, zoonosis control, and food, land and water resources.
Between June and August, more than 70 courses called the “Hokkaido Summer Institute” will be set up both inside and outside the university campus. We have at our disposal not only Hokkaido’s vast natural resources, but also such resources as our cutting-edge research facilities, extensive research forests, and a brand-new training ship. Students from around Japan and overseas will gather and learn while working and mixing with Hokkaido University students.
Background
Hokkaido University was the nation’s first institute of higher education to award bachelor’s degrees. “Boys, be ambitious!” is what Dr. William S. Clark, the first Vice-Principal, was quoted as saying to his students before leaving Sapporo. This phrase is well known among Japan’s youth and also serves as Hokkaido University’s maxim.
