The Republic of Suriname is the smallest independent country in South America. Previously under Dutch rule, Suriname gained independence in 1975 and is known as the melting pot of South America for its ethnic diversity. With Guyana to the west, French Guyana to the east, Brazil to the south and the Atlantic Ocean to the north, Suriname has an area of just under 64,000 square miles and a population of approximately 500,000, most of whom live in the capital city, Paramaribo.
Greenheart Group is one of the largest natural forest owners and operators in Suriname. The group currently owns 184,000 hectares of concession rights in West Suriname, 128,000 hectares of harvestings rights in East Suriname and 91,750 hectares of harvesting rights in Central. Greenheart Group's current hardwood concessions and harvesting rights have a target harvesting volume of approximately 200,000 m3 to 300,000 m3 per year. Concession rights in Western Suriname are owned through Greenheart’s subsidiaries; namely Epro N.V., Dynasty Forestry Industry N.V. and Octagon International N.V.. Harvesting rights in Eastern Suriname are owned through Greenheart’s joint venture with Vista Marina Services N.V. and its fully owned subsidiary Forest Technologies N.V. who operate through an agreement with the Eastern Concession owners. This concession is Suriname’s first FSC certified harvesting operations and increases Greenheart’s total concessions under management to approximately 403,750 hectares, the largest forest operator in Suriname. Greenheart Group's strategy is to convert all harvested logs to rough sawn lumber and high value dressed lumber by building top-of-the-range sawmills. Greenheart's business strategy is to process all logs harvested into lumber for sale to China and other markets around the world as price and demand permit. Processing logs into lumber adds significant higher economic value, simplifies the distribution logistics, lowers transportation costs and allows more marketing flexibility and greater employment. Greenheart Suriname has assembled a highly experienced management team and its operations adhere to the highest standards of sustainability management, is CELOS compliant and is working towards FSC certification
In Q3 2011, Greenheart Group launched Greenheart Housing & Construction N.V. in Suriname. This was part of a Government backed initiative to allow timber and construction companies to compete in building new homes for Surinamese families.
