Mexican healthcare goes online

Article - May 22, 2012
Mexico's patient files are now firmly uploaded into the 21st century, thanks to Health Digital Systems' (HDS) specialized software platform
JAIME CATER, CEO OF HDS
HDS is a 100% Mexican firm whose CEO, Jaime Cater, designed a web-based software platform for hospitals, clinics, state health departments and health insurance companies.

This platform, winner of the National Merit Award for Technology by the CONACYT (National Council for Science and Technology), is raising efficiency and allowing for more knowledgeable decisions among healthcare providers. In short, HDS is helping pull the healthcare sector out of the “dark ages”.

According to Mr. Cater, most hospitals still operate in papers with no electronic records. “Just a few have a computer with the patients’ file. In Mexico, there are still typewriters in public hospitals. There is partial telecom, computers, and minimum broadband Internet,” he explains. “How can a physician help a patient if he or she doesn’t have the patient’s clinical history if the patient has changed hospitals?”

HDS wasn’t the first company to market hospital software, yet it’s the first successful one as it’s the only one to deal with the problem of clinical management. Moreover, about one-third of HDS personnel has a medical background, thereby helping the company to better understand the needs of the sector.

The firm’s integral vision has caught the attention of foreign markets, as well. HDS is currently opening an office in Silicon Valley to sell its products in the U.S., which also include state-of-the-art technology catering to the insurance market that expedites on-line clinical auditing and claim processes.
