Puná, a tropical island at Guayaquil’s door

Article - January 30, 2013
Located approximately two hours from the city lies one of Guayaquil's treasures
Puná Island is located in the Gulf of Guayaquil and belongs to the Guayaquil Canton, being the third largest parish* of Ecuador after Isabela and Santa Cruz, which are in the Galapagos. the island has an interesting eco-touristic potential because of its natural, cultural beauty and beaches, as well as local settlements rich in architectural interest. In fact, the fascinating history of the parish includes the Battle of Puná which was fought on the island in April 1531, between Francisco Pizarro and the native Tumbez people who had managed to resist even the vast Inca Empire, years later, in 1541, the first bishop of Cuzco, Vincente de Valverde, was sentenced to death and eaten there by the islanders in retaliation. The brighter side of the island's history includes anecdotes like the time English merchants played rugby union on the island in the 1930s making it the first place this sport was ever played in Ecuador.

In a debate between Nebot and current President Correa in 2009, Guayaquil's mayor demanded the government bring electricity to the island, a basic need which was responsibility of the national government. Finally in July 2013, and thanks to the pressure of Guayaquil's local government the Island now has the seed for future growth. Tito Torres, general manager of the Corporación Nacional de Electricidad (CNEL) reported that between 96% and 98% of inhabitants of the island has electricity thanks an investment of over $ 350 million. Nebot's local government is also investing in improving the water supply and sewerage.
Life is changing in Puná and there is now a new impressive double moon bridge protruding from the town of Bellavista which seems to welcome tourists arriving by boat from the town of Posorja, after the 40 minute journey during which one can enjoy spotting seabirds and bottlenose dolphins.

Tourists can stay at the eco-lodge on Cauchiche beach, which can accommodate up to 40 guests in five cottages with up to three bedrooms each, living room and private bathroom with hot water. In addition to this eco-lodge there is another environmentally conscious option, an eco-camp with tents, sleeping bags and bathrooms next to the rows of palm trees that have always been part of the island's coastal landscape island.
