With 78 years of experience in developing lightning protection devices, as well as accurately replicating lightning itself for testing purposes, OTOWA ELECTRIC offers best-in-class solutions for when lightning strikes.
Electricity is a necessity in almost every aspect of daily life, and in some advanced technological fields such as semiconductors, there are many products that are highly susceptible to lightning surges. Therefore, essentially, all products that utilize electricity must include technology to protect against lightning, namely surge protective devices (SPDs).
“As the usage of electricity increases so does the need for SPDs. Our core business focuses on products that cater to this specific need,” says Osamu Yoshida, Chairman of OTOWA ELECTRIC, a niche leader in its field that, over its 78-year history, has made great strides in R&D of lightning protection technologies. Collaboration with academia and partnering companies in Japan over the years has also partly contributed to OTOWA ELECTRIC’s success.

OTOWA ELECTRIC is a unique company in that it can deal with both high and low voltage products, utilizing its variety of engineers with expertise in a range of different fields. Its R&D center, meanwhile, which specializes in replicating lightning for product testing, is another unique aspect of the company. “There isn’t a center like it anywhere in the world that can replicate lightning so accurately,” states Mr. Yoshida. “It is a shining example of the accumulation of our technology and expertise over 78 years.”
As OTOWA ELECTRIC aims to expand internationally, while leveraging its technological prowess to move into new business fields, it seeks to continue to build strong relationships with stakeholders. “We put value on human relationships not only domestically but also overseas (for example, with our non-profit seeking activities in Rwanda), and this has helped us to build solid relations and successes.”
