PAGCOR brings basic social services closer to the people through medical and dental missions.
As Henry Reyes, assistant VP of the community relations and services department, says, “We want to be able to reach out to the poor in such a way that they will truly feel that PAGCOR is ready to help them.”
Since July 2010, over 13,000 members of underprivileged communities and indigenous groups have received free medical consultations, dental check-ups, and much needed medicines and vitamins, services they would normally not enjoy due to a lack of health infrastructure in the far-flung areas of the archipelago.
Though many must trek for miles to reach PAGCOR’s health missions, the recipients find the journey worth it. “There is no accessible medical facility in our sitio [area],” says Sirene Villafrea, a Dumagat from the area of the Ipo Dam watershed. “We’re thankful for these services given by PAGCOR. We now have some vitamins and medicines within our reach.”
The gaming revenues of PAGCOR are also put to use in disaster relief efforts. The agency was one of the first agencies to provide assistance when super typhoon Ondoy ravaged thousands of families in Metro Manila. PAGCOR also readily extends help to communities struck by natural calamities.
PAGCOR brought more than 500 cavans of rice (66,500 pounds) to flood victims of Eastern Samar, Agusan del Sur, and Sorsogon in January, 2011.
