Dasman Diabetes Institute launches new health initiative
THE DASMAN DIABETES INSTITUTE
The Dasman Diabetes Institute, in cooperation with the Forsyth Institute, USA, School Oral Health Program and Faculty of Dentistry, announced the launch of new health initiative called “Kuwait Healthy Life Program”. A symposium entitled "Kuwait Healthy Life Study – an Overview of the Initial Findings" was presented by Dr Max Goodson, Senior Member of the Staff at the Forsyth Institute, on 27th of September 2011 at DDI.

This program evaluates Kuwaiti children for changes that may be related to the development of type 2 diabetes. Children are evaluated by a team of dentists and nurses at selected schools. 10,000 children ages 9-11 years have been invited to participate in this program which started in October 2011. Saliva samples, physical measurements of height, weight, blood pressure etc are used to assess fitness.
These measurements will be repeated in two years in 2013. Then, differences in the two measurements will determine which factors place children at risk for developing disease. In the final analysis, it is hoped to develop more effective ways to help healthy children stay healthy. The program has been approved by Kuwait’s Ministry of Education and Ministry of Health.

The Institute’s Director General is Dr. Kazem Behbehani, a world-renowned expert specialising in preventable infectious diseases (particularly HIV/AIDS), diseases of an ageing population, and pandemics. Dr Behbehani was previously a visiting professor at Harvard Medical School, and also worked for many years at the World Health Organisation, and has over 100 scientific papers to his name.
