The second International Greentech and Eco Products Exhibition and Conference Malaysia (IGEM) will be held this year from 7 – 9 September in the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre. The event aims to create awareness among consumers and industry players of the importance of green technology and eco-products for sustainable consumption and production, while showcasing innovative and creative green technology and services and eco-products and initiatives. Building on last year’s success, IGEM 2011 is expected to draw more than 500 companies and organisations from around the world and over 80,000 visitors.
Organised by the Ministry of Energy, Green Technology and Water, in collaboration with the Malaysian Green Technology Corporation, Expomal International, International Green Pur-chasing Network and Green Purchasing Network Ma-laysia, IGEM also aims to promote Malaysia as a regional green economic hub for eco-products and green technology by encouraging spin-off industries in these areas as well as in eco-design and eco-materials.
The Malaysian Govern-ment has identified green technology as an emerging driver in the country’s sustainable economic growth.
At the official opening of last year’s inaugural event, Prime Minister Najib Razak stated: “Green Technology will play a very important role in charting our country’s development. As a natural corollary to our goal of sustainable development, we aspire to become the regional hub for green technology.”
During the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change Conference of Parties meeting in Copenhagen in 2009, the Prime Minister also pledged to reduce Malaysia’s CO2 emission by up to 40 per cent by the year 2020. Consequently, Malaysian industries have taken up the baton, encouraged by a favourable policy environment, in order to help convert the country into the ASEAN region’s green economy hub.
Set as an annual event, IGEM is strategically positioned to take the green lead in the region by converging like-minded industry players and professionals from both the public and private sectors and across a range of sectors. IGEM 2010 set the benchmark as the region’s largest green exhibition and conference. This year, it is set to rack up another notch in its standing as a hotbed in creating a vibrant mix of opportunities to help spur industries and institutions to adopt green technology and boost eco-technological innovators.
This year’s exhibition and conference has a greater focus on the commercialisation of green technology that can become universally adopted. IGEM 2011 also incorporates a thematic focus on sustainable energy, renewable energy and green energy for adoption and start-ups, while providing an essential platform to launch, feature and showcase innovative eco-products, green technologies and services. Organisers encourage the attendance of both local and foreign participants with various backgrounds in the field of renewable energy and energy efficiency.
