One critical aspect of GE Proyectos’ mission is raising the population’s living standard through the building of new infrastructure. This includes an array of different initiatives aimed at achieving the maximum benefit in the quality of life and productivity of all Equatoguineans.
“Over the next five years, we still have so many things to improve,” Francisca Obiang, the Managing Director of GE Proyectos, says. “Even though we have completed highways linking each province, we still have to address the cities. We must also complete our water projects. Many places have potable water, but we have to make this a reality for the entire country. Also, in public health, we are pushing very hard to create clinics and health centers. We have to put them in every location, every district, every province. For schools, we are also pushing very hard over the next five years. As the saying goes, you never finish straightening up your house. You have to constantly work at it. These are the priorities: education, health, electricity.”
As is the case in much of the developing world, bringing these vital services to all of the country means reaching the rural population. This priority has been given a prime place in the country’s Horizon 2020 plan, and particularly in the Equatorial Guinea Industrialization 2020 plan.

“The next steps for the country must come in the form of education,” Ms. Obiang declares. “We are investing a lot in education. For any country in the world to get ahead, no matter how, it must have education. There are many places within villages that – although people think that we have forgotten them – we’re renovating them and even building anew.”
Guiding this strategy, GE Proyectos will have a hand in the modernization of roads, power lines, municipal facilities and housing to help millions of Equatoguineans experience the kind of amenities now taken for granted in the industrialized world.
The development of a reliable transportation network, from two-lane roads linking rural villages with urban centers to highways connecting major cities, will go a long way toward achieving this goal. GE Proyectos has already overseen the building of a 40-mile-long highway linking the cities of Cogo and Akelayong in the Rio Muni region.
Another, more comprehensive, example of the kind of development that GE Proyectos has brought to the countryside can be found in the town of Micomeseng, near the border with Cameroon. There, the organization oversaw the construction of a drinking water treatment plant, convention center, community park, district hospital, municipal market and other civil infrastructure.
In the mainland city of Mbini, meanwhile, the government has invested close to $1 billion on a host of projects aimed at improving living standards and creating development through tourism. There, EG Proyectos is overseeing the construction of a hydroelectric power plant on the Sendje river that will provide a backbone of critical services, securing a reliable source of power for the city’s inhabitants, helping to generate business and commerce and paving the way for a more prosperous future for Equatorial Guinea as a whole.
