Alberto Llaryora, President of AFA Press, participates in Gabarrón Foundation Awards

Revered artists, researchers and politicians are among those to be honored

ALBERTO LLARYORA, PRESIDENT OF AFA PRESS

World-renowned publication, The Economist, is to win an award. Alberto Llaryora, the president of the international publishing company, AFA Press, will present the 11th annual Gabarrón International Prize in Economics to Matthew Bishop, Head of the business section of The Economist in the United States, at a gala award ceremony in New York on 27 November. The event is being held at the Gabarrón Foundation headquarters at the Carriage House Center of the Arts in Manhattan. The prize is an original work of art by the artist Cristobal Gabarrón, for whom the foundation is named.

A member of the judging panel for the awards, Llaryora has enjoyed an illustrious career. He founded AFA Press in 1977, when the company published its first supplement in the Spanish weekly Gaceta Ilustrada. For the past 35 years, it has published highly focused reports about countries and industrial sectors which have appeared in major newspapers around the world, such as USA Today, The Times, The Independent, the Daily Telegraph, Financial Times Deutschland, The Wall Street Journal, The Miami Herald, the Chinese edition of Bloomberg Businessweek and the website Worldfolio.co.uk, among others. Alberto Llaryora is also editor of the newspaper El Periódico de Tucumán in Argentina.

During the New York event, prizes will also go to U.S. sculptor Joel Shapiro, writer Siri Hustvedt and former Chilean president Michelle Bachelet, who will be honored for her extraordinary career. Spanish medical researcher, José Baselga will be awarded a prize in Science and Research, and the prize for Literature will go to the jazz critic, Stanley Crouch. Dancer, Mikhail Baryshnikov, and conservationist, George Bissaca are also being honored.

The ceremony celebrates the 20th anniversary of the Cristobal Gabarrón Foundation and this is the first time it has been held in New York. The main objective of The Carriage House is based on the promotion of the cultural wealth and identity of Spain and America, and the Spanish language.
