Opton: State-of-the-art pipe bending technologies

Interview - April 18, 2023

OPTON was established in 1963 by the current president, Mr. Yogo Teruaki, as a design and manufacturing company of the CNC automatic control device. In 1976, the company developed the CNC pipe benders for brake tubes and delivered it to Nissan Diesel. In the following year, the company won one of the top ten new product awards in Japan, and this led the company to transfer to the machine making industry associated with pipe processing products such as the CNC-controlled pipe cutters.

As the Air Conditioning Plumbing Division of the General Electric Company made an export inquiry about OPTON’s CNC pipe benders in 1983, OPTON established the MiiC OPTON (USA) INC (Detroit, USA) and MiiC OPTON (Europe) GmbH (scheduled to move to Vienna, Austria from January, 2021) at the same time. In 1988, the company developed the world's first robotic pipe bender series for high-precision bending. At the same time as acquiring the patent, the company supplied a large number of their robotic pipe benders to automobile manufacturers, brake tube manufacturers, and car cooler manufacturers.

In 1994, the company developed a non-contact 3D profiler to measure pipes, which was installed for the in-line measurement of the FA production system.
