Néstor Gómez Alcorta started working at Efice in 1971 and has been the company's chairman since 1977. 

Information

Background

1970 – Started an egg farm and later became co-founder of Prodhin. This company is nowadays the leader in the production and distribution of eggs in Uruguay.

1971 – Started working in Efice SA performing administrative and commercial tasks.

1975 – Started a bunkhouse for the import, processing and commercializing of salt.

1976 – Started a trading company importing and selling veterinary products for the poultry market, with representations of Eli Lilly Elanco (USA), Select-Rhone Merieux (USA-France), and the American Breeders Service-Global (USA), to mention the most important firms the company has represented.

1977 – Appointed as Chairman of Efice SA, a position Mr Alcorta keeps today.

1977 – Founded Prodhin, a company that produces and commercializes eggs.

1979 – Elected and became part, until today, of the Board of ASIQUR, a trade organization that gathers and directs all chemical industries.

1987 – Elected and became part of the Board of the Chamber of Commerce Uruguay-Paraguay.

1988 – Elected Vice President of the Board of ASIQUR, a position he kept until 1992.

1989 – Elected and became part of the Board of the Chamber of Commerce Uruguay-Argentina.

1991 – Started AGCEI (Association of Industrial Large Energy Consumers), an organization that gathers and directs the interests of industries accounting for large consumption of energy. He held the Vice President’s position until 1996.

1992 – Elected Vice President of the Board of the CIU (Chamber of Industries of Uruguay), a position he kept until 1994.


1994 – Elected Treasurer of the Board and President of the Commission of Foreign Trade of the CIIU, a position he kept until 1996.

1995 – Elected President of the CIU Delegation to the CIM (Mercosur Industrial Council). CIM was created to join and analyze the interests of all the Mercosur industry, a position he held until 1998.

1996 – Elected Director of Air Liquide Uruguay SA, position he held until 2003.

1999 – Acquired a ranch in Tacuarembó, Uruguay.

2004 – Considering the characteristics of the soil in the ranch in Tacuarembó, with very superficial basalt, Mr Alcorta decided to start a challenging project, raising Merino sheep with ultrathin wool without reducing the amount of wool produced by animal. This is something that other producers considered impossible to be done. He organized a 10-year program, supported by a group of national experts, with the purpose of reaching 18-micron wool in 10 years, starting from wool of 22-23 microns. They reached the goal one year earlier than scheduled.

2010 – Acquired Química Gamma SA, a company dedicated to manufacturing flocculants for water purification and wastewater treatment.
This completed a full line of products manufactured by Efice for water treatment, added to chlorine gas, sodium hypochlorite, caustic soda and ferric chloride, which Efice was already producing and supplying to the market.

Development of the Omega Project: This project will give Efice a qualitative and quantitative jump, positioning Efice as an industrial leader in the region.

2013 – Elected President of the Deliberative Council of Clorosur. This organization joins all the chlor-alkali producers of Latin America and is committed to communicating and encouraging to fulfill all safety standards and best practices in the management and operation of these industries.

What have been the main lessons you have learned in your career and how do you implement them in your management?

Always keep long-term goals very clear, and always be convinced of their success. The implement of PAPS (acronym in Spanish, for Action Plan and Next Steps), which always should be realistic although they seem to be ambitious. Finally, complete the goals in different steps. If this system is applied, you can be sure you will always succeed.

 

Mentors

First of all, my father, who inspired in me this way of thinking and approach to life. Then, my family that always gave me support and spiritual peace. And finally all my friends who gave me good advice.
