Makoto Tani leads the Skylark Group, which operates over 10 brands including Gusto, the only restaurant brand owning restaurants in every single prefecture within Japan and brands in other categories such as Japanese, Western, Chinese, Italian, shabu-shabu, Korean barbecue, conveyor belt sushi, café etc.

 

The Skylark Group is the largest family restaurant chain in the industry. Leveraging its long-cultivated experience and cutting-edge analytics capabilities, the Skylark Group successfully took rapidly changing consumer needs into the company’s management. As a result, the Group posted a record-high profit in 2015.

Experience

After joining Skylark in 1977, Makoto Tani engaged in the development of new restaurant brands and then became President and Representative Director of NILAX, a joint company of Skylark and Nippon Steel Corporation, before assuming the current post in August 2008.

 

As President of Skylark, Mr Tani promoted various management reforms such as productivity improvement, recovery of existing store sales, development of new brands and new restaurants, reform of personnel system, etc. He turned around the business of Skylark and the company got re-listed in the first section of the Tokyo Stock Exchange in October 2014.
