Attorney General and Minister of Justice
The Government of Sierra Leone
Joseph Fitzgerald Kamara (JFK) is one of the most prominent political figures in Sierra Leone. Kamara gained national renown when he was tapped by President Ernest Bai Koroma to carry out his key initiative of stamping out corruption, by heading the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC). Under Kamara’s leadership, the ACC obtained autonomous authority to prosecute, and has led the charge in prosecuting government officials, including those of the President’s own cabinet, which led directly to an improvement in global perceptions of Sierra Leone’s stance on corruption.
He obtained a Bachelor of Law degree from Fourah Bay College, University of Sierra Leone, in 1989, and was called to the Bar in 1990. He taught international Criminal Procedure and Practice at the Sierra Leone Law School until 2013. In 2000, Mr. Kamara received a Master’s in Law in International Comparative Law from the Southern Methodist University in the United States.
