about this company
Water Utilities Corporation (WUC) is a parastatal organisation, wholly owned by the Botswana Government. It was established in 1970 by an Act of Parliament (Laws of Botswana Cap 74:02) with a mandate to manage a single project for the supply and distribution of water in what was then called the Shashe Development Area. In the thirty-nine years since its inception, its mandate has expanded to supplying all the urban centres in the country.
This involves planning, constructing, operating, treating, maintaining and distributing water resources in the country’s urban centres and other areas mandated by the Botswana Government.
WUC also supplies bulk treated water to the Department of Water Affairs for onward distribution to some of the major villages. Currently plans are at an advanced stage to expand the Corporation’s mandate to include the takeover of water supply and waste water management from the Department of Water Affairs and District Councils respectively.
The Corporation’s customer base has grown dramatically from a few hundred connections in 1971 to over 79 000 on 31st March 2009. The Corporation presently supplies over 51 million cubic metres of potable water annually to its total customer base. With a fixed asset value of over P2.3 billion, the Corporation’s infrastructure includes five dams: Gaborone, Nnywane, Bokaa, Shashe and Letsibogo as well as the North South Carrier Scheme which comprises a 360km long pipeline, water treatment plants and associated pump-stations.
