Francisco Gavidia University is located at 3031 Alameda Roosevelt, San Salvador, and the name was given in honor of the great humanist Salvadoran Francisco Gavidia, who was a writer, educator, historian and journalist from El Salvador, was born on December 29, 1863 and died on September 22, 1955. Francisco Gavidia practiced all genres and all provided a rich view of reality. Gavidia has some depth not found in writers before him or his contemporaries. He discovered and taught French alexandrine Ruben Dario (Nicaragua), who joined the verse written in Spanish and led to its ultimate consequences. His spirit led him to search all the paths of literature, so some say that his work is somewhat scattered. Their diversity is no fragmentation of wealth: it is a whole which shows the dedication of a worried man to ground a Salvadoran cultural expression. This studied the prehispanic and colonial past of the country as well as the Central American context of America. Apart from his poetic, participated in literary-journalistic activities and was concerned with education, published numerous essays on educational aspect in 1932 was declared "Salvadoran His Honor" by the legislature.
The Universidad Francisco Gavidia (UFG) was founded on March 7, 1981, beginning his academic activities in June of that year, with an initial enrollment of 534 students. In the period between 1981 and 1989, growth in student recruitment was rather moderate, because in the first nine years of existence, of an initial enrollment of 534 students in 1981 had increased to 1,400 in late 1989 and more of 2.500 in 1990.
The year 1990 marks the beginning of a new era for the University, as events of significance occurred affecting the institutional life of the UFG, due to administrative changes took place on March 27, 1990, where there was election of new authorities, thus made a significant shift in the history of the institution. In front of the new authorities, was elected Mr. Mario Antonio Ruiz Ramirez, a great professional and academic university career, who took the lead in transforming the UFG in a premier institution, both locally and in the region. The dynamism, vision, entrepreneurship and competitiveness of people taking charge of the direction of the University in the second period, introduce a different way of educational administration, so that 1990 is the milestone that marks the transition from the first period to a second term, which until now has been considered the most fruitful in the life of the institution.
Since 1990, the UFG ensures its stability and academic recognition of all sectors of society, and in 1992, establishing the Western Regional Center (CRO) in the city of Santa Ana also in that year, was created Office of Special Projects and International Cooperation whose main activity was aimed at the provision of services in the areas of training, research and educational evaluation and later in 1996 this was renamed Office of Research and Development Center (CIDE) with a more comprehensive and more effective technical resources to meet the demand for private and state agencies, especially the Ministry of Education projects funded with funds from USAID, IDB, IBRD and UNDP. During this period, did important work for the Ministry of Education in the context of educational reform, as several investigations were conducted nationwide educational needs and assessed the CAPS program teachers, who gained some expertise in teaching at primary institutions of the United States.
On February 9, 1996, at Headquarters held a historic event of great importance to the institution after nearly 15 years after its foundation was inaugurated the new campus of the University. This campus was designed and built with educational standards and consists of three buildings of four and five floors for classrooms, one for library, cafeteria and another for an auditorium with capacity for 250 persons, these facilities are put at the service of the university community from January 1996. Buildings used for teaching and learning in addition to adequate space, ventilation, orientation and lighting in each classroom have a sound system and equipped with a fiber optic connection for Internet access as an aid to learning.
In 1997 the University took a qualitative leap in the use of technology when it acquired a Computer Node with direct connection to the Internet, which has ser1vido and continues to serve as a valuable technology resource to support teaching and learning process, in which Thereafter, this medium was considered a breakthrough teaching in higher education teaching throughout Central America.

In the area of ​​specialization and to improve the quality of a group of professors from the university in academic agreement with the University of Louisville, Kentucky United States between 1997 and 1998, were given two masters at the facilities of the University : one in Business Administration (MBA) and the second in Education (MEd). Within this framework, in January 2004, the first school year, curriculum reform is implemented in the 19 races that offered by the University in that year, special arrangements are introduced in the teaching-learning process. The curriculum reform includes thirteen common subjects are the basis for the specialized area in each race: English Language I to IV, Information Technology and Communications of the I to IV, Information Society, Mathematical Logic, Philosophy of Quality, Writing and Spelling and General Culture. It starts at the Masters of Applied Computer Networks and Software Engineering, Faculty of Engineering and Architecture. In February 2004, the firms LATU Systems Uruguay and OQS of Austria made the formal delivery of the document containing the certification ISO 9001:2000 Francisco Gavidia University and the Regional Center West.
The processes are certified University Teaching-Learning Process (SAP) and processes to support the PEA.
Under the commitment to maintain, sustain and promote continuous improvement towards institutional academic excellence, the July 29, 2004, the Universidad Francisco Gavidia received the status of "Accredited Institution" by the Commission on Accreditation of Quality Higher Education (CdA), under the Ministry of Education, also in that year was the renewal of institutional accreditation from the Association of Private Universities of Central America (AUPRICA). These awards have become the immediate response to the various activities that take place both inside and outside the institution.
On August 16, 2004, the University acquired the licensing rights to use the EBSCO database, for use by students and teachers as bibliographic support the teaching-learning process. The EBSCO database, is considered one of the academic database more complete.
On October 18, 2004, the University takes another step of quality, consolidating its position as academic leader in technology, the Advanced Network to connect to the Internet (Internet 2), through agreement with the Florida International University (FIU ) of the United States of America. The Internet2 network is the exclusive network for scientists and researchers from universities and research institutes around the world. On 5 December the same year, he opened the UFG Radio On Line, which is transmitted through the Internet 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. UFG Radio is an alternative way to contact the student population and then with the public in the world, to be tuned in cyberspace.
In March 2006, the University celebrated its twenty-five years of existence, for which various commemorative events were held throughout the year. One of the events that stands out is the nomination of the 59 Avenue South, as Avenida Francisco Gavidia. This effort was made to the Municipal Council of the Municipality of San Salvador. It is worth mentioning that this nomination coincided with the extension of this avenue, by the Ministry of Public Works. Another highlight of the events is the opening of the Student Cultural Center, which houses the Office of Student Development, which depend Cultural Extension Unit, the Unit for Sports and the Student Counselling Unit. In addition, the Center operates Gavidia Francisco Museum as a tribute to the illustrious humanist who gives the name to the University.

In the area of ​​continuing education training, from 2006, the institution through the Center for Continuing Education and Professional Development and systematic has strengthened its range of courses and diplomas, led to specialization and updating of professionals, students and the general public.
The UFG has been a reference on the subject of quality, offering training courses open in the Quality of Internal Auditors under the ISO 9001:2000, which has trained more than 150 people from various industrial, commercial and service. The University also has ventured into the field of consultancy and business consultancy in the area of ​​implementation of Quality Management Systems based on ISO 9001:2000, starting this service with the University of San Pedro Sula in Honduras.
From 2006 to date, the academic offerings of the University has been updated and diversified into specialized areas of knowledge, that distinguish the institution from other national and regional higher education institutions. In July 2007 marked the beginning of the PhD in Economics, delivered under agreement with the Universidad Autonoma de Baja California (UABC).
Since 2006, institutional research and outreach have taken a new turn with the creation of the Research and the Department of Social Projection.
