Business Description
Tobu Railway’s massive network extends through Tokyo as well as four surrounding prefectures: Chiba, Saitama, Tochigi, and Gunma. With 463.3 kilometers of operating track, Tobu is Kanto’s largest private railway and is used by commuters, students, business travelers, and tourists.

Tobu Railways is one of many companies that are part of the Tobu Group, which also operates health clubs, golf courses, theme parks, and hotels. These include Tobu World Square, where the world’s most famous structures are re-created at 1:25 scale, the Courtyard Marriott Ginza Tobu Hotel, and the Tobu Hotel Levant Tokyo, operated in partnership with the Marriott Group.

The Tobu Group also develops and manages condominiums, housing developments, department stores, and various other properties along its railways and in Tokyo as well.

 

Background

November 1, 1897: Tobu Railway Co., Ltd. is founded.
August 27, 1899: The commercial operations of the railway business start.
May 29, 1962: The Ikebukuro Tobu Department Store opens.
October 2, 1987: The Ginza Tobu Hotel opens. (90th anniversary memorial project).
June 10, 1992: The Tobu Department Store Ikebukuro relaunches with the largest sales floor in Japan.
May 22, 2012: Tokyo Skytree Town opens.

Tobu Railway Co., Ltd. has a railway network that serves Tokyo and four other prefectures in Chiba, Saitama, Tochigi, and Gunma.   1. Improving convenience and safety in our railway business.
  2. Continuously strengthening the earnings capabilities of Tokyo Skytree Town.

We also established targeted management indicators on a consolidated basis for fiscal 2016, which is the final year of the plan. Specifically, we are aiming for operating income of ¥65 billion, net income of ¥32 billion, a ratio of operating profit to sales in excess of 10%, and a ratio of interest-bearing liabilities to EBITDA of approximately 7%.

Highlights

  • A new series of express trains

A new series of express trains, the 500 series, will be introduced (scheduled to start operation in the spring of 2017).
Flexible operation in the multi-line areas utilizing the coupling and splitting functions.

  • Revival of steam locomotive operation

Steam locomotive will be operated between Shimoimaichi and Kinugawa Onsen (scheduled to start in the summer of 2017).

Also Shimoimaichi Station, a steam locomotive terminal station, will be renovated and made to look more like an old-fashioned station building from the Showa period.

  • Rebuild Nikko Lakeside Hotel

A drastic plan to rebuild the hotel is under consideration, with the aim of enhancing our brand power and making a hotel with international appeal in Nikko, a popular destination for non-Japanese tourists.

  • Construct a new hotel in the Ginza area

We are thinking about constructing a new hotel that will create synergy with the neighboring Courtyard Tokyo Ginza Hotel, aiming to open it by the 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games in Tokyo.
